Case Study #6 - NDT of Foundations

Nondestructive Evaluation of Concrete Foundations

Portlands Energy Centre | Toronto, ON | Apr 2017

FPrimeC Solutions was engaged byPortlands Energy Centreto perform Non-Destructive Evaluation and Testing (NDE/NDT) of concrete foundation supporting massive gas turbine generators in the PEC generating station in downtown Toronto, Ontario.

The Problem
Cracking and delamination was observed on the concrete foundation of a gas turbine generator, during the routine inspection. The concrete structure sits over a mat concrete foundation and supports the generator. The client was interested to evaluate the condition of cracking, and the effects on structural performance of the foundation.

NDT/NDE Inspection
FPrimeC conducted a detailVisual Inspectionto identify visible cracks on concrete surface. The evaluation was followed byUltrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV), and Rebound Hammer to study the current state of the cracks, and the effect on the performance of the foundation.
